AFP will buy 6 New Fighter Jets to defend the Archipelagic Islands – Spratlys

Italy's M-346 - Price = € 20 Million Euros (Each)

Korea's TA-50 Golden Eagle - Price = $ 21 Million US Dollars (Each)

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) military plans to acquire six jet fighters for interdiction missions against intruders into Philippine waters and air space, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said (July 1, 2011).

"We're giving so much priority to our internal security operations, but lately the equation has shifted because we realize we've also to assess our external defense capability," Gazmin told reporters at the sidelines of the Air Force's 64th anniversary celebrations.

Armed Forces chief Gen. Eduardo Oban Jr. said senior military officials had recommended an initial six multi-role planes to be acquired within the term of President Benigno Aquino III.

He said the Air Force was looking at either Korea's TA-50 Golden Eagle or Italy's M-346, and depending on their arms and in-flight instrumentation would cost about P1 billion each.

The Air Force retired its last seven F5 fighter jets in 2005 after having been in service for 40 years.

Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario, meanwhile, said President Aquino's planned visit to China did not mean the Philippines was backing down from its assertions Chinese forces had been intruding on Philippine waters.

The Philippines claims that Chinese forces intruded at least nine times into Manila-claimed areas in the Spratly Islands since February, allegations that sparked an exchange of diplomatic protests and verbal jabs. Mr. Aquino has strongly criticized China, saying two weeks ago that his country would not be bullied by China in the disputed region.

The presidential trip would likely take place in late August or early September, Del Rosario said.

The Spratlys, a chain of barren, largely uninhabited islands, reefs and banks in the South China Sea, are claimed wholly by China, Taiwan and Vietnam and partly by the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. The islands are believed to be atop vast oil and gas deposits.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jianchao has denied his government committed any intrusions, but acknowledged that Chinese vessels were exercising Beijing's sovereign rights in one incident at the Reed Bank near the Spratlys. Philippine officials complained the Chinese vessels harassed a local oil exploration ship into leaving the Reed Bank in March.

Just before he traveled last week to Washington, Del Rosario said he was told that the military was verifying another foreign intrusion into the Spratlys area.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave strong assurances that the US was committed to the defense of the Philippines, and would provide affordable weaponry amid mounting tensions in the Spratlys, Del Rosario said.

He said he separately gave US defense officials a list of equipment the Philippines needed to improve its capability to monitor foreign intrusions in its territorial waters near the Spratlys.

Clinton assured del Rosario that the US would honor its 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines that calls on each country to help defend the other against an external attack by an aggressor in their territories or in the Pacific region, he said.

Del Rosario said he told US officials that if the Philippines received defense equipment, "we become a stronger ally for you

Good only there are still world-power countries that stand by the rule of law for the spirit of fairness, justice & peace.- I,JUAN MASIPAG ,a Filipino-Chinese guy wants to share my concern.

  8. I'm not a military tactician but I believed air superiority is the key to winning a small scale war or punitive action by the dragon. Therefore,p-noy should concentrate our meager AFP resources more to the Philippine Air Force for the acquisition of radar, air to ground missiles and air to air missiles to counter the dragon naval superiority.

Sooner, one of these days we might be surprised, finding them right in front of our land doorsteps- grabbing our natural resources and would just simply present their historical claims. very funny....

  12. An appeal to President Simeon Aquino please take a look the flight of the electric consumers from Iloilo , Capiz and kalibo the exuberant rates of our monthly electric bills compared from the rest of the other part of Visayan islands. Recently, distributors rate increased and now another producers rate increased. The reasons of Peco,Capelco,Ileco and Pedsi high cost of operation or is it padding of expenses to make it appeared that they are losing money. So many accounting manipulation. For privatization this is the priced we must pay and for the government owned corporation under delivery of fossil fuels and fat bonuses at the expense of our taxpayers money.Energy Regulatory Board,I believed is a rubber stamp pad government agency.

  15. Lately I have started reading through net sourced files regarding anything under the sun regarding military arms purchases of our beloved armed forces. True we concentrated so much on internal security weaponry to kill our fellow Filipinos that our planners forgot all about the external aspects.

In short, and again, our political situation has been the same since the time of the Spaniards to the Americans, then the Japanese. Wherein they always depended on foreign freebies rather than literally spending our own money to acquire even the bare necessities.

Mga arogante kase mga tukmol na politiko natin, puros grandstanding without any regards to national security focusing on their pockets rather than securing a nation.

  16. To P-noy address in your SONA, the electric generation cost that has overcharged the local consumers. This generation producers are used to artificially high yield rates since the ''tabacco administration''. Always pegging their ROI to Singapore dollars not in the basis of Philippine pesos. We must consider that Singapore has a far higher GDP than the Philippines, a matter we should address.Everybody knows this, that higher energy costs, means a burden on the part of everybody not only in the business/industry sector but also to the local consumers.

  19. Our production cost is high, one of the reason is high cost of electricity. Many manufacturing foreign investors transfered their facilities to our neighboring countries such as Thailand,PROC and ....Our economy is banking on our heroic OFW which comprises one third of our gross GDP.The problem comes, when our OFW will be out of jobs in some 1st world countries.because they themselves(not all)can't compete with the Chinese juggernaut and the Indian sub-continental powerhouse using the phrase of ex-PM Tony Blair.Probably in the near future some of the OFW might be displaced, and therefore coming back to our country(RP)and later to find out there is no available jobs here. I therefore appeal to P-noy to have a foresight such as that of the late APO FM.

  20. 1973 oil embargo shocked the whole world with impunity no countries was spared. At that time the dragon was asleep and their consumption was not to much. There people was still using bicycle as their means of transportation. Now the dragon has awakened. 300 million of their population economic lives has been improved and started to own luxury cars. Therefore, they have to maintain the steady flow of oil supply to their marketplace and now they started to think how to annex Spratly islands to fulfill their economic demands. By using, either historical claims economic diplomacy or intimidations .During that time APO FM and his technocrats has a foresight and started to put up geothermal, hydro power and nuclear plant away from traditional fossil fuel burning plants. After the people power revolution the nuclear power plant wasn't commission and no alternative was made during yellow lady administration. It was felt during tabacco administration that continuous long hours of brown out has been experienced, worked stoppage, lost of man hours and etc...I can't recalled either through emergency power or executive order that created Independent power producers. These IPP takes advantage of this scenario and assured them of high yield return of investments. They are now addicted to this earnings and used to it.Until now the detrimental effect of this greedy electric generation producers can be still felt up to the present.

  21. The dragon are their to stay as foresee, the structure continuous to expand in mischief reef.First, they say it's a fisherman shelter during stormy weather. Now it's seem the other way around it's more of a military installation and look like a staging ground or as a jumping board to further their hegemony, bad to the world peace. It's is sad to say.The truth is they have to feed 1.3 billion of their population not only that the dragon people likes to eat and love for seafood such as sharkfin soup, abalone and etc... found mostly in southeast asia countries. Now it's not oil they are after but also food basin as security for their future survival. they don't have the luxury of the like of the eagle which own a vast stretches of fertile land that produce a lot of food supplies which can even feed the whole world. It's sad to say that diplomacy is already stepping backward not forward. To my fellow countrymen and it's allies be prepared of the eminent danger. I might sound like an alarmist but it's the reality.Juan Masipag

  26. Today in the APEC forum the assurances of continuous supply and low tariff of food products was discussed and committed to the APEC members.Actually, the real issue was to make and let the dragon feel appeased to it's dilemma -the problem of food requirements. This simply shows that the Dragon weak point was all about food security to feed 1.3 billion people. That's why they want to annex South China Sea. Juan Masipag

At least our juan Masipag has awakened and also the the untiring efforts of our heroic Juan should be given credit and recognition for realizing that refitting our frigates with harpoon missiles to improve our minimum credible defense capabilities was considered and it's still a long way to go and of course the most essential part is diplomacy issue should be the top priority. Let us give thanks to the eagle for his benevolent and unwavering support.God bless the eagle for his top responsibilities for being the world policeman. Some people don't understand how hard is the role of the eagle, the financial burden, the soldiers sent to be sacrificed, away from love ones and etc... for the sake of maintaining peace in the world.
